Talking to her family about their journey was only the beginning — Tisha still wanted an understanding of her broader community’s experiences.
The revelation she’d had about food being a vessel for memories and a way to express emotions led her to another: The local market community was full of people with lived experiences similar to that of Tisha’s family.

The Charles Darwin University Innovation Award recognises young people that have demonstrated creative, inspirational and innovative thinking and have made a significant contribution to an entrepreneurial culture and globally competitive Northern Territory.
Tisha Tejaya founded Cultivation, an initiative that uses art, stories and technology to bridge cultural, language and generational gaps. Since 2020, Tisha has self-published the ‘Parap & Rapid Creek Market Pocketbook’ now in its second edition. The pocketbook contains botanical illustrations, produce profiles, migrant and refugee anecdotes and recipe ideas. Tisha received funding from the NT Regional Arts Funds and is donating 500 copies of the pocketbook to the Territory community.

Tisha Tejaya is an ink illustrator and the author of the wonderful ‘Parap and Rapid Creek Pocketbook’ which features over 100 exquisite botanical illustrations, recipe ideas, folklore and anecdotes from Australia’s Northern Territory, and the Top End’s multicultural market community.
Tisha is so proud of her heritage and her rediscovery of the importance of food and family, that she shares her passion, skill and knowledge in this 8-part Channel NT Workshop Series.

She decided to write a book on the different kinds of fruit and vegetables sold and explain how they are used in cooking. She also hand illustrated the book herself. It was so successful she sold out her 800 copies in a month.

Over the last two years, she has collected stories, notes, information and even hand drawn 72 different fruits and vegetables at the market and turned it into a pocket book.
